Turning Off Activity Status on Instagram

The short version: Turning off activity status on Instagram removes the green dot and "active now" or "last active" text that other people see next to your name, and it takes about three taps to do. The catch nobody puts in the first paragraph is that the moment you switch it off, you also lose the ability to see when anyone else was last online, including the people you wanted to keep an eye on.

What activity status shows

Activity status is the small green dot that sits on someone's profile picture in your DMs list, plus the line of text that says "Active now" or "Active 3h ago" when you open a chat with them. It is not the same as read receipts (the "Seen" tag under a message) and it is not the same as story views. It is purely a presence indicator, the same idea as the green dot on WhatsApp or the online light on LinkedIn messaging.

It is on by default for every Instagram account, personal or business. Instagram switched it on quietly years ago and most people have never gone near the setting because it is buried two menus deep.

How to turn it off, step by step

  • Open Instagram and tap your profile picture in the bottom right
  • Tap the three lines in the top right, then "Settings and privacy"
  • Scroll to "Messages and story replies" (on some app versions it sits under "Privacy")
  • Tap "Show activity status"
  • Toggle it off

That is the whole job. No app restart needed, no waiting period. It changes instantly on your end, though the people you were chatting with recently might still see your old status for a few minutes until the app refreshes on their phone.

If you manage Instagram for a business page and use Meta Business Suite, the same setting exists inside the account's privacy settings in the app itself, not inside Business Suite. Business Suite does not currently give you a toggle for this, which trips up a lot of social media managers who go looking for it in the wrong dashboard.

The trade-off nobody mentions upfront

This is the bit most "how to" pages skip past because it makes the feature sound less useful than it is: Instagram's activity status is a two-way mirror. Turn yours off and you stop seeing everyone else's "active now" tag too, including people you follow who have left theirs on. You cannot hide your own dot while still watching for someone else's. It is all or nothing, and it has worked this way since the feature launched.

So if you are turning it off to avoid a specific person seeing you are online at 1am, remember you are also losing a useful signal: knowing when a client, a journalist, or a collaborator is at their phone and likely to reply fast. People treat this as a privacy win with no downside. It is not. It is a swap.

A worked example

Say you run a small boutique PR agency and you pitch journalists over Instagram DM because half of them never check their inbox. Before you switch activity status off, you can see that a journalist you are chasing was "Active 10 minutes ago", so you send a short follow-up while she is likely still on the app and get a reply within the hour. Turn the setting off across your account to feel less watched by former clients scrolling your profile, and you also lose that signal for every working relationship you use it for. A better move in that situation is to leave activity status on for your main business account and only worry about it on a personal account you use for family and friends. Separate the two uses rather than switching the whole thing off and assuming it is a pure upgrade.

Does turning it off affect your reach or reels

No. Activity status has nothing to do with the algorithm that decides whose posts and reels show up in feed. If you have noticed your posts getting fewer eyes lately, that is a separate issue worth checking through why Instagram reach can drop suddenly, and if your posts seem to have stopped reaching followers who used to engage regularly, there is a dedicated breakdown of why Instagram might stop showing your posts to followers. Neither of those is connected to the activity dot, so do not waste time toggling it on and off hoping it fixes distribution problems.

What stays visible even with it switched off

Turning the setting off does not make you invisible on the platform. People can still see when you last posted, when you post a new story, and whether you have viewed theirs (that is controlled separately). It also does not hide you from close friends lists or affect who can message you. If your actual goal is tighter control over who sees your activity at all, pair this setting with a real review of your follower list and DM requests, particularly if you suspect an old or unused account is still logged in somewhere, which is also worth checking if you are dealing with anything that looks like unauthorised access to your account.

Common mix-ups worth clearing up

A few things people confuse with activity status, because the settings menu groups privacy features together and it is easy to toggle the wrong one:

Should you turn it off

For a personal account used mainly with friends and family, turning it off is low-risk and mostly cosmetic. Nobody is tracking your sleep schedule off it in any meaningful way, but plenty of people find the idea of being watched uncomfortable, and that discomfort alone is reason enough.

For a business or creator account where DMs double as a sales channel, think twice before switching it off across the board. If you run client outreach or customer service through Instagram, knowing when someone is online helps you time replies and close conversations faster, and removing that signal from your own side is a genuine cost, not just a privacy upgrade. Weigh the specific use case rather than following a blanket "always turn it off" rule you read somewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Does turning off activity status hide that I'm online from everyone?

Yes, it hides the green dot and "active now" text from everyone you chat with, but it also hides their activity status from you, since the setting works both ways.

Can I turn off activity status for just one person on Instagram?

No, Instagram does not allow per-contact control. It is a single account-wide toggle in Settings and privacy under Messages and story replies.

Will turning off activity status affect my read receipts?

No, read receipts are a separate setting in the same menu. You can turn off activity status while leaving "Seen" message receipts switched on, or the other way round.

Does turning off activity status hurt my Instagram reach or engagement?

No, it has no connection to the algorithm that ranks posts, reels, or stories. Reach problems are almost always down to content performance or account settings elsewhere, not the activity status toggle.
