How Much Does It Cost to Build a Sales Funnel? Real Numbers for 2026

The short version: a basic DIY sales funnel costs £100 to £250 a month in software once you've paid for a landing page tool, an email or CRM system, and hosting, while hiring freelancers to build one runs £1,500 to £5,000, and a full agency-built funnel with management sits between £5,000 and £20,000 plus a monthly retainer. The number that matters more than any of those, though, is your ad testing budget, because a beautifully built funnel with no traffic spend behind it will never tell you if it works.

Why "how much does a sales funnel cost" doesn't have one answer

I get asked this at least once a week, usually by someone who's just watched a webinar promising a "done for you funnel" for £997. The honest answer is that a sales funnel isn't a product you buy off a shelf, it's a stack of separate costs that people bundle together and call one thing. You're paying for strategy, copywriting, design, the software that holds it all together, and traffic. Some of those you can do yourself for nearly nothing. Some you shouldn't try to do yourself at all.

What you're building also changes the price enormously. A simple lead magnet funnel that swaps a checklist for an email address costs very little to set up. A webinar funnel with automated follow up sequences, a tripwire offer, and retargeting ads is a different animal entirely, and an application funnel for a £5,000 consulting package needs a completely different level of copy and qualification.

The DIY route: what the software alone costs

Before you've paid a single person, here's what the tools cost most people reach for:

  • Landing page builder (Leadpages, Unbounce, or similar): £37 to £99 a month
  • Email marketing or CRM (ActiveCampaign, Klaviyo, or HubSpot's paid tiers): £29 to £150 a month depending on list size
  • Webinar or video hosting (Zoom Webinar, StreamYard, or Vimeo): £15 to £40 a month
  • Domain and hosting: £8 to £15 a month
  • Payment processing (Stripe or PayPal fees): 1.4% to 3.4% per transaction, not a flat cost but it adds up fast once sales start

Add that up and you're looking at roughly £100 to £250 a month in software before you've written a word of copy or spent a penny on ads. That's £1,200 to £3,000 a year, every year, just for the plumbing. If you're already juggling five other subscriptions for social scheduling, analytics, and project management, this is exactly the kind of overlap I cover in how to cut your marketing tech stack costs, because most people are paying twice for the same job without realising it.

Hiring people: real freelancer rates for 2026

If you're not writing your own copy or building your own pages, here's what UK and US freelancers charge, based on rates I've seen quoted directly and paid myself:

  • Funnel copywriter (landing page plus 5 to 7 follow up emails): £300 to £1,500 depending on experience and how much research they do
  • Landing page design and build: £250 to £1,200
  • Funnel strategist or consultant, day rate: £500 to £1,200 a day, or £1,500 to £4,000 for a full mapped out project
  • Paid ads manager: £500 to £1,500 a month retainer, on top of your actual ad spend
  • Video editor for VSL or webinar content: £200 to £800 per project

A solid mid-range funnel built by freelancers, not an agency, tends to land between £2,000 and £6,000 for the initial build, before ongoing management or ad spend.

Agencies: what you're really paying for

Agencies quote higher because you're paying for a team, a project manager, and usually a template process they've refined across dozens of clients. Expect £5,000 to £15,000 for a full funnel build including strategy, copy, design, and tech setup, then £1,500 to £3,000 a month to manage and optimise it. Some agencies bundle in ad management for a percentage of spend, usually 10% to 20%, on top of the retainer.

Is it worth it? Sometimes. If you have an offer that's already proven to work through direct sales or one to one conversations, an agency can move faster than you can alone. If you don't have a proven offer yet, you're paying agency prices to find out something a £500 test could have told you.

What it cost me to build my own funnel

When I started rebuilding my business a few years ago, I put together a webinar funnel for a consulting offer. I did the copy myself because that's my background, but I paid for everything else. Landing page tool: £79 a month. ActiveCampaign: £49 a month. A designer for £650 to make the pages look like something other than a template. Facebook ad spend for the first test: £500.

That's roughly £1,300 spent before a single sale came through, and I want to be blunt about what happened next because most people don't say this part out loud: it didn't work the first time. My cost per lead was £11.40 in week one, which was too high to be sustainable. It took three rounds of new ad creative and a rewritten headline before I got that down to £4.80 a lead, and that took six weeks, not six days. Anyone who tells you a funnel converts straight out of the gate is either lying or got lucky.

The tech and the copy weren't the problem. The first version of my offer positioning was. That's the bit nobody wants to say plainly: you can spend £15,000 on the most beautifully built funnel in the world and it will still fail if the offer underneath it isn't right, and you can build a ugly funnel in an afternoon for £40 that converts brilliantly because the offer and the audience match. The funnel is the container. It's not the thing people are buying.

The costs people forget to budget for

Every cost breakdown online lists software and copywriting fees. Almost none of them mention these:

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Ad testing budget. You need at least £500 to £1,000 just to get enough data to know if your funnel converts, separate from your ongoing ad budget. I break down exactly what that testing phase should look like in what Facebook advertising really costs for small budgets, and the short version is that under £10 a day rarely gives you enough volume to draw real conclusions.
  • Revisions. Your first version of the copy, the page, and the sequence will not be the final version. Budget for at least one full round of changes after you see real data, not just your own opinion of what looks good.
  • A proper CRM, not just an email tool. If your funnel sells anything above a low ticket price point, you need to track where each lead is in the pipeline, not just whether they opened an email. I explain the difference in what CRM means and why your business needs one, and skipping this step is one of the most common false economies I see.
  • Time. If you're building it yourself, the software might be cheap, but you're trading £150 a month for 15 to 20 hours of your own time you're not spending on paying client work.

A realistic budget breakdown by tier

Bare minimum DIY (£100 to £300 total, plus your time)

One landing page, one lead magnet, a free email tool tier or the cheapest paid plan, no paid traffic, relying on organic reach or an existing list. Fine for testing an idea, not fine as a long term growth engine.

Solid small business build (£2,000 to £6,000 first three months)

Freelance copywriter and designer, proper email/CRM setup, a genuine ad testing budget of £500 to £1,000, and one round of revisions built into the timeline. This is where most established small businesses should sit.

Agency scale-up (£10,000 to £25,000 first year)

Full team build, ongoing optimisation retainer, larger ad budgets from the start (£2,000 to £5,000 a month), suited to businesses with a proven offer and cash flow to sustain a few months of testing before profitability.

If your funnel is selling access to a course rather than a service or physical product, the build costs shift again, and it's worth reading what an online course website needs and how to build one before you commit to a funnel structure that assumes a single transaction rather than an ongoing student relationship.

What I'd tell someone starting from scratch

Don't buy the tech stack first. Write the offer down in one sentence, test it in DMs or on a call with five real people before you build anything, and only then decide whether you need a £79 a month landing page tool or a £15,000 agency build. The funnel amplifies whatever is already true about your offer. It doesn't fix it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a simple sales funnel cost to build yourself?

Expect £100 to £250 a month in software costs alone for a landing page tool, email or CRM system, and hosting, before any ad spend or paid help. If you write your own copy and use free design templates, you can get a basic version live for under £150 total in the first month.

Is it worth paying an agency to build a sales funnel?

Only if your offer is already proven through direct sales, referrals, or one to one conversations. Agencies cost £5,000 to £15,000 for the build plus £1,500 to £3,000 a month to manage, and that money is wasted if you're still figuring out whether people want what you're selling.

What's the cheapest way to test a sales funnel before spending money?

Build one landing page with a free tool tier, send it to your existing email list or personal network, and offer the product or a waitlist for it before you build any automation. If nobody bites at that stage, no amount of funnel spend will fix it.

How much should I budget for ad spend when testing a new funnel?

Plan for at least £500 to £1,000 as a dedicated testing budget, separate from ongoing ad spend, spread over two to three weeks. Anything less rarely produces enough data to tell you if the funnel converts or if the numbers are just noise.
