Why Online Marketing is Important for a Business

Marketing is an important aspect of any business, whether they are just starting out or have an established brand. There are several types of marketing activity a business can undertake from traditional advertising to online channels. The rise in popularity of social media has also made digital marketing a vital channel to explore, and there are many ways in which you can reach customers via these methods and open up a wider audience for your brand. Getting in front of a targeted demographic brings a host of opportunities for a growing business, so take a look at some of the reasons why you need to focus on marketing efforts in this area. Here's why online marketing is important for your business.

Why Online Marketing is Important for your Business

Increasing brand awareness

New and established businesses know how hard it can be to reach the right people with their message. Although traditional marketing methods have worked for decades, online marketing is bringing a new wave of targeting to light. The use of social media and online advertising is opening up new avenues to wider and more focused audiences. This key channel of marketing helps to raise the profile of a business with a better understanding of its customers and audience. The use of the Internet also has the scope to reach people worldwide so doesn’t limit interaction with buyers to local or national levels.

Building relationships

As people use the Internet and mobile technology more and more, the need for an online presence backed by targeted marketing has never been more important. With the insight online marketing can give, you can talk and engage with customers and potential buyers on a more personal level. For instance, if you have a customer who is a big fan of the World Cup, then you can either brush up on your knowledge by turning to resources like the Unibet blog, or if they have never heard of the blogging platform before, direct them to it. By doing so, you can impress them with your knowledge and find some common ground – ideal for building long-lasting business relationships.

Cost factor

On the whole, online marketing is a cost-effective and targeted method of gaining results for a company compared to traditional print media options. This cost difference enables a larger scope of advertising and outreach to take place plus helps to target the message in a stronger way to the right people.

Social media funnels

As customers change how they shop, social media is becoming an important part of how brands can get in front of a tech-savvy and socially conscious audience. Targeted marketing in this area helps to build brand awareness and gain interaction with people on a different level. Social media helps businesses to create a lifestyle surrounding their brand and offers people the chance to be a part of it. Digital marketing is an important aspect of the overall marketing strategy as it provides a unique insight into your audience and its behaviors. Investing in this area will also offer organizations the chance to flourish and promote products and services to an international audience with ease.

The short version: Online marketing is essential because it allows you to reach customers where they spend most of their time - on the internet. A solid digital strategy helps you build brand awareness, generate leads, and compete with larger businesses without breaking your budget.

The One Metric That Changed How I Measure Online Marketing Success for Small Businesses

After working with hundreds of small business owners over the past decade, I have noticed one consistent mistake: they measure online marketing success by follower counts and website visits, then wonder why their bank balance does not reflect the effort they are putting in. The metric that changed outcomes for my clients was Cost Per Acquired Customer (CAC), tracked specifically by channel. When you know that your Facebook ads are bringing in customers at £12 each, your email list at £3 each, and your SEO content at £1.50 each over a rolling six-month period, you stop guessing and start making decisions that compound.

Here is a real example. A florist I worked with in Manchester was spending £400 per month on paid social media and around six hours per week writing blog posts and maintaining her Google Business profile. She assumed the paid ads were doing the heavy lifting because she could see the clicks. When we traced actual purchases back to their first touchpoint, 68% of her paying customers had found her through organic search, and her CAC from that channel was £2.10 compared to £19.40 from paid social. She had the evidence backwards. We reallocated her budget, and her monthly revenue grew by 34% within three months without spending a single extra pound.

The reason this matters so much specifically for online marketing is that digital channels leave a trail that offline marketing simply cannot match. You do not get this data from a flyer or a newspaper ad. Online marketing earns its place in a business budget not just because it reaches people, but because it tells you the truth about which people are worth reaching and at what cost. That transparency is rare in business, and most small business owners are not making the most of it because they have never been shown how to read it .

To start doing this yourself without needing a marketing agency, focus on these four steps:

  • Set up goal tracking in Google Analytics 4 tied to actual purchases or enquiry form submissions, not just page views
  • Add a simple "how did you hear about us" field to every enquiry form or checkout page, because GA4 still misses assisted conversions
  • Calculate your CAC monthly per channel by dividing total spend (including your time at a realistic hourly rate) by new customers from that channel
  • Review the number every quarter and cut or reduce any channel where CAC exceeds 20% of your average order value

I want to be honest about something most marketing content will not tell you: online marketing is not important for every business in the same way. A sole trader plumber in a small town may get 90% of business from word of mouth and Google reviews alone. A product-based e-commerce brand targeting a national audience needs paid search, content, and email working together. The reason online marketing is important is not because it is fashionable or because every competitor is doing it. It is important because it is currently the only marketing environment where a business with a modest budget can outperform a larger competitor through smarter measurement and faster iteration. That advantage disappears the moment you stop paying attention to the numbers.

Frequently asked questions

What makes online marketing different from traditional marketing?

Online marketing lets you target specific audiences, track results in real-time, and adjust campaigns instantly. You can reach people globally at a fraction of the cost of traditional advertising, and you have detailed data about who's engaging with your content.

Can small businesses really compete online?

Absolutely. Online marketing levels the playing field because success depends on strategy and creativity, not just budget size. A small business with great content and smart targeting can outperform larger competitors who don't understand their audience.

How do I know if online marketing is working for my business?

Set clear goals before you start - whether that's website traffic, leads, or sales - then track metrics like click-through rates, conversion rates, and return on investment. Most platforms provide detailed analytics so you can see exactly what's working and what needs improvement.

What online marketing channels should I focus on first?

Start where your customers are spending time. If you're B2B, LinkedIn might work best. For e-commerce, Instagram and Google Shopping could be priorities. Social media, email marketing, and search engine optimization are good foundations for most businesses.
