How to use Quora to drive traffic

Wondering how to use Quora to drive traffic to your blog or website?

When I started out asking and answering questions on Quora (years ago!), it was very much something I did for the fun of it, but if very quickly turned into quite the surprise; I wasn’t just getting traffic back โ€“ but I was getting very high-quality traffic!

In this blog post, Iโ€™m going to show you how to use Quora to drive traffic to your website.

What is Quora?

[sc_fs_faq sc_id=”fs_faq9c7avxk1l” html=”true” headline=”p” img=”” question=”What is Quora? ” img_alt=”” css_class=”” ]Quora is a question-and-answer platform/social network where anyone can ask questions to be answered by other users, or answer questions that others are posting on the platform. Questions range from personal to highly technical, with all kinds of topics covered.[/sc_fs_faq]

If youโ€™re unfamiliar with Quora, itโ€™s basically a Q&A platform โ€“ remember Yahoo! Answers?

Itโ€™s similar to that, only much, much better.

Quora have managed to build a great community of people, where you can find amazing, truthful answers to all kinds of questions. Sure, you’ll also find some spammy or just plain bad answers – after all, everyone can use and join! – but generally, you’ll find some really great answers to your questions if you look for them: from personal life stories to motivate you to technical SEO advice and everything in between.

As I mentioned earlier, when I first started using it, it was more for the fun of it; itโ€™s a dangerous place, this Quora. You might find yourself reading a question about how to create the perfect Facebook Ad and next thing you know, itโ€™s 2 hours later and youโ€™re close to tears, reading about peopleโ€™s first loves.

Anyway, after spending some time reading questions and answers on the popular platform, I decided I was going to start answering too.

I didnโ€™t think too much of it in the beginning, but just a week later, when I checked my analytics, I was blown away โ€“ not only did I already start getting traffic from Quora, but all of the traffic from Quora was of very high quality.

They spent upwards of 5 minutes on my website and, most importantly, they took action โ€“ they downloaded freebies, they browsed the website at length and so on.

And the benefits to using Quora donโ€™t end here; for one, itโ€™s a great source of long-term traffic.

The questions you answer donโ€™t disappear after a few days; in fact, many questions last for years and theyโ€™re constantly updated with new answers.

Quora can also help establish your authority in your niche.

As you help people with thoughtful, educational answers, you will grow your profile and your authority with it. People will see you as someone who knows what theyโ€™re talking about and who is also willing to help.

Coming back to how to drive traffic with Quora, I want to share with you what Iโ€™ve learned using Quora โ€“ and how you can get started as well with this platform, with a focus on how to drive traffic:

Quora best practices

Before your start answering any questions, itโ€™s important to note that if youโ€™re not careful, or if youโ€™re overly promotional, youโ€™re quite likely to get your account banned.

And, unfortunately, there is no warning before that happens; plus, based on my research, it seems like they rarely re-instate banned accounts.

So, be careful how you answer โ€“ donโ€™t link to the same things over and over again, and most importantly, when you answer questions, try to be helpful first and promotional, second.

If the link you add is truly relevant to the question, and it helps bring value to your answer, then use it.

Otherwise, you should refrain from linking to your website or blog just for the sake of it.

When you find a question you want to answer, make sure to check the other answers as well before; donโ€™t repeat the same things others have said, try to bring your own, personal input to the question or if there’s not much new to say, try a different questions.

It also helps to write long answers, with lots of helpful screenshots and other images.

Basically, you need to write short blog posts, of at least 300 words.

But, first look at the other answers as well: if theyโ€™re all very short, then just try to write a longer one than them, but if theyโ€™re quite long, then attempt to write just as long an answer โ€“ but only so long as itโ€™s not fluff, but actual relevant, helpful information.

And most importantly, if thereโ€™s one thing to remember, itโ€™s this: always strive to be helpful.

Just to sum up, here’s what to remember when it comes to Quora best practices for driving traffic:

  • Don’t be overly promotional
  • Always try to be helpful first and provide value through your answers
  • Only link to content that truly provides value to the reader
  • Use screenshots and other imagery to make your answer easier to read and to provide even more value
  • Bring your own input – don’t just repeat what everyone else is saying

How to drive traffic with Quora: what to link to

In order to start driving content from Quora, you first need to have great content that you can link to in your answers; look at your blog โ€“ what is your best content? Which blog posts are the most helpful and informative?

Open up your Google Analytics and start researching your most successful content, with a focus on evergreen content.

Then, when you have a list of top content that you can link to, you can start searching for questions where these links would work.

How to drive traffic from Quora: finding quality questions

The first actual step to using Quora for driving traffic is to find the right questions to answer. You can use the Quora search bar to get started:

How to use Quora to drive traffic

If you click on the last one (starting with โ€œSearchโ€), youโ€™ll be able to see all of the questions containing those keywords. But, even better, you should click on the different topics and start following them:

This way, youโ€™ll be able to see all of the latest questions and answers in that topic and have them appear on your main page.

Make sure that those topics are active and have a decent amount of users/followers; if they aren’t posting new content regularly, there’s little point in following those topics.

To see the latest questions in that topic, click on Answer on the topics’ main page.

Then, next to each question, youโ€™ll be able to see when it was posted.

Ideally, itโ€™s best to jump on new questions and be the first, or one of the first people to answer. Alternatively, if it has enough answers but they’re really bad, it’s a great opportunity to stand out and deliver a great answer.

To check how popular the question is, you’ll need to click on the 3 dots right below the question and then click on View Stats and Log:

You will then be able to see how many followers to question has, as well as how many views, and the last time it was asked.

Try to answer questions that have people following them – those are the most likely ones to get you the most eyeballs on your answer, as well as get you more traffic because they will appear in people’s feeds.

Make sure to browse through all of the different topics that match your keywords and follow them, so that youโ€™re consistently getting new questions to answer directly in your feed.

As you start answering questions, youโ€™ll also start getting “similar question” suggestions from Quora, as well as requests for answers from other users. Go to โ€œAnswersโ€ at the top of your profile:

quora answers

If you click on โ€œQuestions for youโ€, youโ€™ll get suggestions for similar questions to the ones youโ€™ve already answered. And, under Answer Requests, youโ€™ll find all of the questions that youโ€™ve been asked by other Quora users.

Start answering questions

As you start to find good questions, itโ€™s time to get down to business and start answering them.

As I mentioned earlier, the most important thing to do here is to be as helpful as possible. Donโ€™t think of how you can incorporate links into your answer first and foremost; focus on writing the best possible answer, and then direct people to your blog so that they can read more if thatโ€™s what they want.

Try to give enough in your answer that it provides value, but make the readers want more, so that theyโ€™ll click on your link as well.

Make sure to also use as much imagery as possible in your answers, particularly screenshots.

For one, it makes your answers easier to read and, secondly, screenshots bring more value to your answers. It shows you took your time and it makes it easier for the people reading your answers to understand your point of view โ€“ just like with blog posts.

Then, the only thing to do is to keep up the good work โ€“ try to answer questions as often as possible, and use different blog posts that you want to promote.

In time, youโ€™re going to start seeing results; make sure you measure them on Google Analytics.

Whatโ€™s great about Quora (well, apart from all the other benefits Iโ€™ve listed earlier!) is that you can start getting results quite quickly โ€“ in fact, Iโ€™ve started getting traffic from Quora within the first 2 weeks of using it, and great traffic at that.

But the best part? These answers are evergreen – as long as the question/answer is still relevant, people will continue to find them in their searches (including directly on search engines) and, therefore, keep driving traffic to your blog/website.

Quora can be an amazing source of traffic for your blog and website; not only that, but it helps drive traffic for the long term and it also helps improve your online profile and your social influence.
